Overview And Tasting Notes

The Partagás Serie D No. 4 is the definitive Cuban Robusto — renowned for its bold character, rich complexity and iconic red-and-gold band. Hand-rolled in Cuba from long-filler Vuelta Abajo tobaccos, it measures 4⅞" × 50 and delivers a powerful yet refined 40–50 minute smoke. Its dark, oily wrapper and impeccable construction ensure an even burn and a smooth draw, while the blend showcases the trademark Partagás earthiness and depth. First created as part of the brand’s 1930s Alphabet Series and originally made for the British market, the Serie D No. 4 is more than a cigar — it’s a symbol of Cuban heritage and the benchmark against which other Havana robustos are measured.

About Partagás

The Partagás brand was established in 1845 by Don Jaime Partagás y Ravelo, a Spanish immigrant who became a true pioneer of the Cuban cigar industry. He was among the first to experiment seriously with fermentation and ageing, and he introduced the tradition of the lector — a reader who entertains and educates the rollers — a practice that continues in Havana factories to this day. Don Jaime acquired prime Vuelta Abajo plantations to secure the world’s finest tobacco, setting Partagás apart from the outset. His story ended in tragedy — he was murdered on one of his plantations in 1868 — and the brand passed through several hands, including the Cifuentes family, who expanded its reach into the global icon it is today.

Tasting Notes of the Partagás Serie D No. 4

A bold, complex, medium-to-full Cuban Robusto.

- Initial Third: Opens with bold earthiness, toasted bread and a creamy nuttiness; subtle black pepper and cedar emerge, with a touch of caramel sweetness and floral undertones over that classic, intoxicating Cuban aroma.

- Middle Third: Deepens with leather, cocoa and coffee bean, joined by dried fruit, honey and a gentle spice; creamy cedar and cinnamon appear, the body medium-to-full and smoothly balanced.

- Final Third: Intensifies with dark espresso, bittersweet chocolate and peppery spice; a long, memorable finish of lingering wood, charred oak and a touch of citrus and vanilla, with the trademark Partagás earthiness ever-present.

- Aroma: A bouquet of cedar, cocoa, earth and subtle spice, with herbal, floral and honeyed notes.

Fun Facts About the Partagás Serie D No. 4

The Serie D No. 4 traces back to Partagás’s 1930s “Alphabet Series” (A, B, C, D), where each letter denoted a different size — the D No. 4 was created specifically for the British market, and it’s now the most famous survivor of that series.

Partagás factories still employ a lector — a reader who reads news and literature aloud to the rollers — a tradition Don Jaime Partagás himself introduced in the 19th century. (It’s also how the Montecristo brand got its name, from readings of the Dumas novel.)

The Serie D No. 4 is widely considered the benchmark Cuban Robusto — the cigar most often used as the yardstick against which every other Havana robusto is judged.
