Montecristo is the world's best-selling Cuban cigar brand — first produced in 1935 at the H. Upmann factory in Havana, where rollers named it after Alexandre Dumas' novel The Count of Monte Cristo, which they read aloud during rolling sessions. The classic range — No. 1 through No. 5 — represents some of the most balanced and consistently excellent Cuban cigars ever made. Today Montecristo is produced at the Francisco Donatién factory in Pinar del Río and encompasses the classic range, the Edmundo family, the Open series, and the prestigious Línea 1935.

Overview And Tasting Notes

The Montecristo Open Eagle is the flagship of the Montecristo Open series — a Gran Robusto measuring 140mm with a 57 ring gauge, delivering the classic Montecristo balanced character in its most substantial Open format. Medium-bodied with cedar, nuts, coffee and a smooth, satisfying finish across approximately 60 minutes, the Open Eagle is the choice for smokers who prefer the wider ring gauge experience with the quality and consistency that has made Montecristo the world's best-selling Cuban cigar brand.

Tasting Notes of the Montecristo Open Eagle

The Open Eagle delivers a fuller, more developed version of the Open series character — the wider ring gauge allowing greater complexity to develop than the Open Regata.

- Pre-light: Cedar and sweet tobacco with a characteristic Montecristo earthiness.

- First Third: Cream, cedar and toasted nuts open smoothly. The 57 ring gauge delivers a cool, even draw from the outset.

- Second Third: Coffee and light leather develop, with a subtle spice on the retrohale. More complex than the Open Regata — the extra length and ring gauge pay dividends here.

- Final Third: Earth and cedar carry to a clean, balanced finish. Smooth and satisfying throughout.

- Overall: Medium-bodied, balanced and consistently enjoyable — the Open series at its most developed.

Fun Facts About the Montecristo Open Eagle

The Open Eagle's 57 ring gauge was among the widest in the Habanos S.A. portfolio at its launch — reflecting the rapid global shift toward wider-format premium cigars in the 2000s. Montecristo's decision to release a 57-ring gauge cigar under its most famous brand name signalled a significant acceptance of the wider-format trend by the traditionally conservative Cuban cigar industry.

The Open series vitola names — Regata, Eagle, Master — were chosen to reflect a sporting, active lifestyle positioning distinct from the more traditional Montecristo classic range. The Eagle is the most prestigious of the three, positioned as the flagship of the series.

Despite the wider ring gauge and more modern positioning, the Open Eagle uses exactly the same Cuban tobaccos as the classic Montecristo range — the same Vuelta Abajo and Semi Vuelta leaf that has made Montecristo the world's best-selling Cuban cigar brand.

FAQ About the Montecristo Open Eagle

How does the Open Eagle compare to the Open Regata?
The Open Eagle is larger (140mm × 57 vs 110mm × 48 ring gauge) and delivers a fuller, more complex smoke across 60 minutes versus the Regata's 30. The Eagle is the more rewarding of the two; the Regata the more accessible.

Is it good for beginners?
Its medium body makes it accessible to smokers with some Cuban cigar experience. If you're new to Cuban cigars, start with the Open Regata or Petit Tubos.

How long does it take to smoke?
Approximately 60 minutes at a relaxed pace.

What does EMS mean?
English Market Selection — confirming the cigars arrived via the official Habanos UK importer Hunters & Frankau and passed additional authenticity and condition checks.
