Overview And Tasting Notes

The Montecristo Línea 1935 Maltes is one of the most prestigious releases in Montecristo's modern portfolio — part of the Línea 1935 range launched to mark the brand's 80th anniversary, using the finest selected Cuban tobaccos aged for a minimum of two years. The Maltes vitola measures 140mm with a 52 ring gauge. Medium to full-bodied with exceptional complexity — dark cedar, leather, coffee and dried fruit with a long, refined finish — the Línea 1935 Maltes represents Montecristo at its most ambitious and sophisticated.

About Montecristo

Montecristo is the world's best-selling Cuban cigar brand — first produced in 1935 at the H. Upmann factory in Havana, where rollers named it after Alexandre Dumas' novel The Count of Monte Cristo, which they read aloud during rolling sessions. The classic range — No. 1 through No. 5 — represents some of the most balanced and consistently excellent Cuban cigars ever made. Today Montecristo is produced at the Francisco Donatién factory in Pinar del Río and encompasses the classic range, the Edmundo family, the Open series, and the prestigious Línea 1935.

Tasting Notes of the Montecristo Línea 1935 Maltes

The Maltes delivers a more complex, developed version of the Montecristo character — the two-year minimum aging adding depth and integration that the standard range cannot match.

- Pre-light: Rich cedar and dark earth, with a complexity that signals the extended aging of the tobacco.

- First Third: Dark cedar, leather and coffee open with authority. The aged tobacco delivers a smoothness and integration from the very first draw.

- Second Third: Dried fruit and dark chocolate develop alongside continued leather and coffee. The Línea 1935 character — richer and more developed than the standard Montecristo range — is fully present.

- Final Third: Black pepper, earth and a long, complex finish. Medium to full-bodied by the close — one of the most satisfying endings in the Montecristo range.

- Overall: Medium to full-bodied, complex and deeply rewarding — Montecristo at its most ambitious.

Fun Facts About the Montecristo Línea 1935

The Línea 1935 was launched in 2015 to mark Montecristo's 80th anniversary — the name referencing the brand's founding year at the H. Upmann factory in Havana. All tobaccos in the Línea 1935 blend are aged for a minimum of two years before rolling, giving the range a depth and integration unavailable in standard production.

The Maltes vitola (140mm × 52 ring gauge) takes its name from Malta — continuing the Línea 1935's tradition of naming vitolas after places with historical connections to the Count of Monte Cristo story, referencing Alexandre Dumas' novel that gave the brand its name.

The Línea 1935 range is produced in extremely limited quantities — the extended aging requirement constrains production significantly, making it one of the most genuinely rare regular-production Montecristo lines.

FAQ About the Montecristo Línea 1935 Maltes

What makes the Línea 1935 different from standard Montecristo?
All tobaccos in the Línea 1935 are aged for a minimum of two years before rolling — significantly longer than standard Montecristo production. This produces a depth, smoothness and integration that the classic range cannot match.

Is it suitable for beginners?
Its medium to full body makes it better suited to experienced smokers. The standard Montecristo range — particularly the Open Regata or Petit Tubos — would be a better starting point.

How long does it take to smoke?
Approximately 60 minutes at a relaxed pace.

What does EMS mean?
English Market Selection — confirming the cigars arrived via the official Habanos UK importer Hunters & Frankau and passed additional authenticity and condition checks.
