Montecristo is the world's best-selling Cuban cigar brand — first produced in 1935 at the H. Upmann factory in Havana, where rollers named it after Alexandre Dumas' novel The Count of Monte Cristo, which they read aloud during rolling sessions. The classic range — No. 1 through No. 5 — represents some of the most balanced and consistently excellent Cuban cigars ever made. Today Montecristo is produced at the Francisco Donatién factory in Pinar del Río and encompasses the classic range, the Edmundo family, the Open series, and the prestigious Línea 1935.

Overview And Tasting Notes

The Montecristo Edmundo is one of the most popular additions to the Montecristo portfolio in recent decades — a 135mm cigar with a 52 ring gauge in the Edmundo vitola, delivering the classic Montecristo balanced character in a format that sits comfortably between a Robusto and a Churchill. Medium-bodied with cedar, coffee, leather and a refined finish across approximately 50 minutes, the Edmundo strikes an ideal balance between smoke time and complexity — accessible enough for regular smoking, substantial enough to satisfy experienced palates.

Tasting Notes of the Montecristo Edmundo

The Edmundo delivers the classic Montecristo character at an ideal scale — enough length and ring gauge for genuine complexity to develop without demanding the commitment of a longer smoke.

- Pre-light: Cedar and sweet tobacco with a gentle earthiness — the classic Montecristo aroma.

- First Third: Cedar and toasted nuts open cleanly. The 52 ring gauge delivers a smooth, consistent draw from the outset.

- Second Third: Coffee and light leather develop alongside continued cedar. Balanced and consistently enjoyable.

- Final Third: Black pepper and earth emerge, with a long, refined finish. Medium-bodied throughout.

- Overall: Medium-bodied, balanced and satisfying — the Montecristo character at its most versatile.

Fun Facts About the Montecristo Edmundo

The Edmundo vitola was created specifically for Montecristo — named after Edmond Dantès, the protagonist of Alexandre Dumas' The Count of Monte Cristo, the novel that gave the brand its name. It is one of the few vitolas in the Habanos portfolio named after a fictional character.

The Edmundo family was launched in 2001 in response to the global trend toward wider ring gauge cigars. At 52 ring gauge, the Edmundo was wider than any vitola in the classic Montecristo range — a significant departure that proved immediately popular with collectors and everyday smokers alike.

Montecristo remains the world's best-selling Cuban cigar brand — consistently outselling every other Habanos brand in export markets. The Edmundo has played a key role in modernising the brand's appeal to a younger generation of cigar smokers.

FAQ About the Montecristo Edmundo

How does the Edmundo compare to the Double Edmundo?
The Edmundo is shorter and lighter — 135mm vs 155mm, delivering a 50-minute smoke versus the Double Edmundo's 60 minutes. Both are medium-bodied; the Double Edmundo has more complexity. The Edmundo is the more accessible daily option.

Is it good for beginners?
Its medium body and accessible character make it suitable for smokers with some Cuban cigar experience. If you're new to Cuban cigars, the Open Regata or Petit Tubos would be a better starting point.

How long does it take to smoke?
Approximately 50 minutes at a relaxed pace.

What does EMS mean?
English Market Selection — confirming the cigars arrived via the official Habanos UK importer Hunters & Frankau and passed additional authenticity and condition checks.
