About Partagás

Partagás was founded in Havana in 1845 by Don Jaime Partagás Ravelo, a Catalan immigrant who became one of the pioneers of the Cuban cigar industry. He was among the first to take a serious interest in the cultivation and fermentation of tobacco, acquiring prime plantations in the Vuelta Abajo — still the source of Partagás leaf today. He named his company the Real Fábrica de Tabacos Partagás ("Royal Factory"), signalling that he supplied the royal houses of Europe.

Don Jaime met a dramatic end — he was murdered in 1868 on one of his own plantations, a crime never solved. The brand passed through several hands, including the Cifuentes family, who grew its reputation through the twentieth century. Today Partagás is one of Havana's most revered marcas, famous for a bold, full-bodied, earthy house style — leather, cocoa, espresso, black pepper and deep woody notes — the benchmark for powerful Cuban cigars.
