About Partagás

The Partagás brand was established by Don Jaime Partagás y Ravelo, a Spanish (Catalan) immigrant who became a pioneer of the Cuban cigar industry. He was among the first to experiment seriously with fermentation and aging techniques, and he introduced the tradition of employing a lector — a "reader" to entertain and educate the factory workers as they rolled — a practice that continues in Havana to this day. Don Jaime acquired prime plantations in the Vuelta Abajo, renowned for the world's finest tobacco, and that commitment to quality raw material set Partagás apart from its inception. A visionary, he met a tragic end — murdered on one of his plantations in 1868 — and the brand passed through several hands, including the Cifuentes family, who expanded its reach and influence.
