Drew Estate is the world's largest hand-made premium cigar manufacturer, producing approximately 80 million cigars per year from La Gran Fábrica in Estelí, Nicaragua. Founded in 1996, the brand is celebrated for Liga Privada, Undercrown, Kentucky Fire Cured and the Blackened collaboration with Metallica. Undercrown was born from the Liga Privada rolling team — they wanted to create a cigar using the same techniques and craftsmanship as Liga Privada but with tobaccos accessible enough to smoke every day. Fine Cigars Club visited La Gran Fábrica on the TOR Tour 2026, seeing firsthand the extraordinary operation behind every Drew Estate cigar.
The Undercrown Maduro is a medium-to-full-bodied smoke driven by the richness of the San Andrés Mexican Maduro wrapper — darker and more complex than the Shade, with excellent value across the 45-minute smoke time.
- Pre-light: Dark cocoa and sweet earth from the Maduro wrapper, with a richness that hints at the smoke to come.
- First Third: Rich cocoa and espresso open confidently. The draw is full and the Maduro sweetness is present from the first light — this is a darker, more flavourful smoke than the Shade.
- Second Third: Leather and black pepper emerge alongside continued dark chocolate. The Brazilian filler adds a subtle earthiness and depth.
- Final Third: A long, sweet Maduro finish — cocoa, leather and a lingering sweetness from the fermented wrapper. Rich and deeply satisfying to the end.
- Overall: Medium-to-full-bodied, rich and excellent value — the darker, bolder Undercrown for Maduro lovers.

Like the Shade, the Undercrown Maduro was created by the Liga Privada rolling team — the same torcedores who roll the most critically acclaimed cigars in the Drew Estate portfolio. The Undercrown line exists because they wanted a cigar they could afford to smoke themselves every day.
San Andrés Mexican Maduro tobacco — used as the wrapper here — is grown in the volcanic Veracruz region of Mexico. The fermentation process that creates a Maduro wrapper can take months, transforming the leaf from green to a deep, oily brown while developing its characteristic sweetness.
Drew Estate produces approximately 80 million cigars per year from La Gran Fábrica in Estelí — more than Cuba produces as an entire country. It is the largest hand-made cigar manufacturer in the world.
How does the Undercrown Maduro compare to the Undercrown Shade?
The Maduro is richer, darker and fuller in body — San Andrés Mexican Maduro wrapper vs the Shade's Ecuador Connecticut. If you prefer cocoa, leather and espresso over cream and cedar, the Maduro is your cigar.
Is the Undercrown Maduro suitable for beginners?
It is more accessible than Liga Privada or the Blackened M81, but the medium-to-full body means it suits smokers with some experience rather than absolute beginners. The Undercrown Shade is a better starting point if you're new to full-flavoured Nicaraguan cigars.
What is a Maduro wrapper?
Maduro (Spanish for "ripe") refers to a wrapper leaf that has undergone an extended fermentation process, typically using heat and moisture to transform the tobacco over weeks or months. The result is a darker, sweeter, more complex wrapper with lower acidity.
How long does it smoke?
Approximately 45 minutes for the Robusto format.
