Overview And Tasting Notes

The Casa Turrent Serie 1973 Robusto is a medium-bodied, box-pressed Mexican cigar named for the birth year of Alejandro Turrent, a leading figure in premium Mexican tobacco. Measuring 5¼" × 50, it is hand-rolled at the family’s Nueva Matacapan de Tabacos factory and built around a Criollo wrapper from San Andrés, a Nicaraguan binder, and a filler of aged San Andrés Criollo and Nicaraguan leaf. The result is a smooth, even-burning cigar that showcases the distinctive character of San Andrés Criollo — and if you love Mexican San Andrés in any cigar, you have the Turrents to thank: for over a century they have grown it, and today supply the leaf to much of the industry.

Cigar Aficionado described the profile memorably, likening it to “chewing on chocolate-covered almonds”, with black tea and cinnamon adding complexity over an abundant nutty sweetness.

About Casa Turrent

Casa Turrent is the flagship brand of the Turrent family, who have cultivated tobacco in Mexico’s San Andrés Valley since 1880. Across five generations the family has become known as Mexico’s “first family of tobacco” — not only making their own acclaimed cigars but supplying prized San Andrés leaf to many of the world’s best-known brands. Today Alberto and Alejandro Turrent continue the tradition, combining estate-grown Mexican tobaccos with boutique craftsmanship and inventive blending. The Serie 1973 captures that dual identity: deep agricultural heritage on one hand, and a modern, boutique approach to Mexican cigar-making on the other.

Tasting Notes of the Casa Turrent Serie 1973 Robusto

A creamy, cool, medium-bodied box-press full of San Andrés character.

- Initial Third: Cacao, oak and an earthy sweetness, with roasted nuts, subtle butterscotch and caramel, plus a touch of white pepper and a tea-like note on the cold draw.

- Middle Third: Creamy cappuccino and lingering caramel, with earth and cedar more pronounced and nutmeg and baking spices building; the retrohale is nutty with a touch of black pepper.

- Final Third: Liquorice, black pepper, hay and earth, with caramel and vanilla persisting on the finish — balanced, gently sweet and moderately spiced.

- Aroma: Earth, leather, cedar, cinnamon and sweet dates, with a semi-sweet nutty character and subtle vanilla.

- Mouthfeel: Creamy and cool with a velvet-like texture and an effortless draw; the box press enhances both burn and flavour delivery.

Fun Facts About the Casa Turrent Serie 1973 Robusto

The “1973” in the name is the birth year of Alejandro Turrent, the family member who has done much to change the wider perception of Mexican tobacco from a supporting player to a headline leaf.

The Turrent family are the de facto supplier of San Andrés tobacco to much of the cigar industry — so many cigars you enjoy from other brands contain Turrent-grown leaf without your knowing it. The Serie 1973 lets you taste it front and centre.

The family has been farming the San Andrés Valley since 1880 — over 140 years and five generations — which is why they’re known as Mexico’s “first family of tobacco.”
