The Diplomáticos No. 2 is a classic Cuban torpedo (pirámide) measuring 6⅛" × 52, hand-made entirely from long-filler tobaccos grown in Cuba’s legendary Vuelta Abajo region. Introduced in 1966 as a more affordable stablemate to the Montecristo No. 2, it quickly earned a reputation all its own — a balanced, medium-to-full-bodied pirámide widely regarded as one of the finest value torpedoes in the Havana catalogue, and a superb daytime smoke. The tapered head focuses the draw and concentrates the flavour, delivering the cool, leisurely, characterful experience the shape is prized for, at a price that remains one of the best-kept secrets in Cuban cigars.

Diplomáticos is a distinguished Cuban brand launched in 1966, during the island’s post-revolutionary era. It debuted with five vitolas that mirrored the formats of the iconic Montecristo Nos. 1–5, conceived as a slightly milder, more accessible alternative made in the same Havana factories from the same Vuelta Abajo tobacco. Over the decades Diplomáticos built its own devoted following, prized for its quality and its close kinship with Montecristo. While the range has slimmed over the years, the No. 2 endures as the brand’s flagship — a robust yet balanced pirámide that has become a benchmark for value among Havana connoisseurs.
A smooth, creamy, medium-to-full pirámide with classic Havana complexity.
- Initial Third: Woody and floral with a gentle creaminess; a subtle, honey-like sweetness with hints of citrus and delicate spice, over earthy undertones and a touch of nuttiness.
- Middle Third: Develops more pronounced leather and a meaty richness, with terracotta, moist earth and a persistent, balanced spice; occasional fruity nuances of peach or apricot appear.
- Final Third: Intensifies with deeper wood, earth and a lingering nutty finish; subtle pepper and a creamy, leathery texture persist for a long, earthy, complex close with a touch of citrus zest.
- Aroma: A bouquet of wood, earth, floral notes and light spice, with a creamy, mellow sweetness throughout.
- Mouthfeel: Smooth and creamy with a velvet-like texture and an even burn; the torpedo shape ensures a focused, flavourful, cool draw.

Diplomáticos was created in 1966 as an affordable sister to Montecristo — its original five sizes directly mirrored the Montecristo Nos. 1–5, made in the same factories from the same Vuelta Abajo tobacco. That heritage is why the No. 2 is so often called the connoisseur’s value alternative to the Montecristo No. 2.
The No. 2’s shape — the pirámide, or torpedo — is one of the most technically demanding for a torcedor to roll, with its tapered head. The taper concentrates the smoke, which is a large part of why the format is so prized.
Of the brand’s original line-up, the No. 2 is the great survivor — as the range contracted over the decades, this pirámide remained the flagship and the reason the Diplomáticos name still commands respect.
How does the Diplomáticos No. 2 compare to the Montecristo No. 2?
They share the same shape, the same Vuelta Abajo tobacco and the same Havana factories. The Diplomáticos is generally a touch more affordable and is widely regarded as offering outstanding value — the connoisseur’s alternative to its more famous sibling.
What does “English Market Selection” (EMS) mean?

Is the No. 2 a good daytime cigar?
Yes — its balanced medium-to-full profile and roughly hour-long smoke make it one of the most enjoyable daytime pirámides in the Cuban range.
